How to Make a Playlist for Free on Spotify, YouTube Music and More

You do not need a subscription to make a playlist. How to build one for free on Spotify and YouTube Music, what the free plans limit, and how to draft one from a description.

Quick Takeaways:

  • Spotify and YouTube Music both let you create and edit playlists on their free plans. You pay with ads and some playback limits.
  • On Spotify Free you can create playlists, add any song and share them. Playlists still open in shuffle on mobile.
  • Building a playlist by hand is slow when you want 30 songs or more. A playlist generator can draft one from a description in under a minute.
  • Spotivibly is free to use: one playlist a day without an account, three a day with a free account, saved to Spotify or YouTube Music.

You do not need a paid subscription to make a playlist. Both of the biggest streaming services let free users build, edit and share playlists. What changes on a free plan is how you listen, not whether you can create. Here is how to do it on each, and a faster route if you would rather describe the playlist than pick every song.

Make a playlist on Spotify Free

On your phone:

  1. Open Your Library and tap + (Create).
  2. Choose Playlist and give it a name.
  3. Tap Add to this playlist, or search for a song, open its menu and choose Add to playlist.

On desktop or the web player:

  1. Click + next to Your Library and choose Create a new playlist.
  2. Search for songs and drag them in, or use Add to playlist from a song's menu.

What the free plan limits. Since September 2025, free users on mobile can pick and play specific songs within a daily allowance of on-demand time. Playlists still open in shuffle by default, ads play between songs and some features, such as queueing, stay with Premium. None of this stops you building the playlist itself.

Make a playlist on YouTube Music for free

  1. Open a song's menu and choose Save to playlist.
  2. Pick New playlist, name it and choose who can see it.
  3. Keep adding songs the same way.

The free plan plays ads, and on mobile it limits on-demand listening and background play compared with Premium. Making and sharing playlists works on the free plan.

Apple Music

Streaming Apple Music's catalogue needs a subscription. If you already own songs, the Music app can still organize those into playlists without one.

The faster route: describe it

Picking 30 songs one by one takes time, and it is easy to fall back on the same artists you always play. A playlist generator works the other way round: you describe what you want and it drafts the list.

  1. Go to the Spotivibly playlist generator.
  2. Describe the playlist. Name a moment, a sound and one constraint: "upbeat indie and alt-pop for a Saturday morning clean, 110 to 130 BPM, no slow songs".
  3. Pick a length between 10 and 50 tracks.
  4. Save it to Spotify or YouTube Music. Spotivibly saves it for you, so you do not need to connect your own account.

It is free to use: one playlist a day without an account and three a day with a free account.

Write a better description

Short prompts give general results. Each detail you add removes songs that would not fit:

Prompt What it adds
"chill music" Almost nothing: any relaxed song qualifies
"chill acoustic music for a rainy afternoon" A texture and a moment
"chill acoustic and indie folk for a rainy afternoon, soft vocals, nothing above a walking pace, mostly 2010s" Texture, moment, vocals, tempo and era
